Unless you’re talking about riverboat gambling, most people wouldn’t consider Mississippi a hotbed of casino gambling, but they’d be wrong.
Currently, 12 cities in Mississippi have casino gambling. These cities are mostly located along the Gulf Coast or on the northern border of the state.
The state has 35 licensed casinos operating within their borders. These casinos offer over 38,000 slot machines, 1,000 table games, 100 poker tables, and multiple sports betting facilities.
Many of these casinos have done extensive renovations in the past few years. This was as a result of hurricanes that have blasted through the area in the last few years.
Mississippi has legal gambling in the three Gulf Coast counties of the state. They have also allowed gambling in any structure that is 800 feet from a high water line of a body of water or on riverboats.
While the Gulf Coast casinos can be built on dry land, other casinos in the state are built over a body of water, usually the Mississippi River. In more creative cases, a man-made trench of some sort is dug out to force the water under the casino to meet the legal obligations.
The state also allows for riverboat gambling. This leads to several casinos attaching a boat (in water) to a land-based hotel and other amenities, making it legal.
Recent changes in the law have expanded casino offerings to include sports betting. Many casinos have added sportsbooks to their casinos, which has led to them expanding their sports lounges and bars to create an atmosphere conducive to attracting sports fans.
Of all the casinos in the state, two are Native American casinos. They’re under the umbrella of one resort but operate under two different licenses.
I’ve gone through ratings on several different review sites to provide you with the best casinos in the state.
In compiling this list, I used the following review sites:
- Trip Advisor
- Yelp
- Booking.com
- Expedia
- Hotels.com
- Orbitz
- Trivago
These sites allow for guests to review their experiences at the hotel. After reviewing the information, I have listed the casino resorts in order based on reviews.
Keep in mind that some hotels may get lower reviews because they’re designed to be simpler than some of the higher-ranked hotels.
For instance, a $600 a night resort may get a five-star rating, but a $39 a night budget hotel may get only three stars. That doesn’t make the three-star hotel a bad choice. It just means that they have fewer amenities than the five-star hotel.
If you’re going to one of these casinos, make a plan. Don’t count on gambling 24/7. Make some arrangements to see some sights. Take in an activity like going to the beach or playing some golf. Sitting in a dimly lit room with screens full of flashing lights for a week straight isn’t healthy.
In other words, take a break and enjoy the surroundings outside.

Conclusion
A lot of changes have happened in the Mississippi casino scene in the last two decades. Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Many casinos closed and never reopened.
Many had to rebuild and renovate. Some took upwards of five years to recover.
Other hurricanes hit hard as well between 2005 and 2018. While the damage was not as bad as Katrina in most cases, repairs were still costly.
A number of independent casinos prior to Katrina sold or came under the management of larger chains. The larger casino chains provided the necessary tools to rebuild and reopen the damaged properties.
Since 2018, casinos in the state have been put in the spotlight once again.
Mississippi was among the first states to allow sports betting after the law was overturned (in actuality, they passed a sports betting law prior to the overturning of the federal law). This has led to a number of casinos adding sports betting to their menu of casino offerings.
In some cases, some are removing other gambling options to accommodate sports betting, such as eliminating a poker room or reducing the number of table games or gaming machines in anticipation of the popularity of the new option.
